National Rural Crime Network

Police Funding Analysis 2024/25

Our recent groundbreaking research on organised criminal gangs evidenced for the first time the link between rural crime and the international drugs trade.  Following on from the research we conducted a comprehensive analysis into the allocation of national and local government funding or rural and urban policing, aiming to grasp any existing disparities.

By examining the proposed funding allocation between rural and urban areas, we have uncovered insights crucial for enhancing our understanding of the challenges facing rural policing.

Rural v/s Urban Percentage Increase Comparison

Urban Police Forces Budget (2024/25): £8,521.1 million. Rural Police Forces Budget (2024/25): £6,034 million.

We understand the funding pressures on policing across England and Wales but our research is clear; if we are serious about stopping the crime gangs then we must properly resource the fight against rural crime. Our analysis of the proposed funding settlement shows a marked weighting of funding towards predominantly urban areas.

The calling of a General Election provides us with an opportunity to highlight to the new government the urgent need for further funding in the fight against rural crime gangs.

Reconsidering Police Funding

Estimated cost

of the annual budget

We want to see the next Government commit additional funding for:

  • Rural Crime Co-ordinators and data analysts in every police force.
  • Long term government funding for the National Rural Crime Unit (NRCU)
  • Further research on the cost of rural crime with a full rural crime economic impact assessment.

We estimate the cost to implement these key measures to tackle rural crime gangs to be £xxxx over the next 3 years*.  That’s just xx% of the annual police budget for 2024/25.
